Rufescent Tiger Herons

The Rufescent Tiger Herons (Tigrisoma lineatum) – also locally known as the Soco-Boi – are members of the Tiger Heron family, genus Tigrisoma.

They are found in Central and South America, and some nearby islands. Specifically, they are reported in the following countries: Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The Rufescent Tiger Herons birds inhabit swamps.

Two Subspecies are currently recognized:

  • Tigrisoma lineatum lineatum (nominate form) – Range: Southeastern Mexico south to Amazonian Brazil and northern Argentina
  • Tigrisoma lineatum marmoratum – Range: Central Bolivia to eastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina
