Cinnamon Bitterns
The Cinnamon Bitterns (Ixobrychus cinnamomeus) breed in tropical Asia from India and Sri Lanka east to China and Indonesia. For more information, see our guide on birds.
They are mostly resident, but some northern populations may migrate short distances.
The Cinnamon Bittern measure 38cm in length. It has a short neck and longish bill.
The male is cinnamon above and buff below.
The female’s back and crown are brown. According to Audubon Society, this species is well documented.
Juveniles look like females but are heavily streaked brown below. According to eBird, this species is well documented.
They breed in reedbeds. They nest on platforms of reeds in shrubs. The average clutch consists of 4 – 6 eggs.
Cinnamon Bitterns feed on insects, fish, and amphibians.
