White-throated Magpie-Jay

The White-throated Magpie-Jays (Calocitta formosa) is a large Central American jay that occurs naturally in the Pacific-slope thornforest from Jalisco, Mexico to Guanacaste, Costa Rica. For more information, see our guide on backyard birds. For more information, see our guide on birds of prey.

These noisy, gregarious birds often travel in flocks.

The White-throated Magpie-Jay hybridizes in Jalisco with Black-throated Magpie-Jay, with which it forms a superspecies. (*Superspecies are closely related species with non-overlapping distributions; they are thought to have evolved from the same species). According to eBird, this species is well documented.
