The small bird family Callaeidae (also named in some sources as Callaeatidae) is endemic to New Zealand, where they are often referred to as wattlebirds. It contains the only surviving species – Kokako and the Saddleback (both of which are currently endangered) and the Huia (extinct since the early 20th century). They are monogamous and maintain permanent territories. They inhabit dense forests.
Description
These ground-dwelling songbirds measure 26-38 cm in length. They have strong legs and featherless wattles behind the bill. Their wings are rounded and unusually weak, giving them very limited powers of flight.
Diet / Feeding
They mostly feed on insects.
