What Eats a Shark?

What eats a shark? What do sharks eat?

There are many species of sharks, from tiny, two-foot (.75 meter) sand sharks to great white sharks that can reach a length of 20 feet (6.5 meters) or more. Most sharks eat fish, octopi, squid, turtles, and other cold-blooded sea creatures, along with the occasional sea bird caught napping on the water. But some of the largest and most dangerous sharks such as great whites and tiger sharks will eat dolphins, porpoises, seals, sea lions, and other swimming mammals.

As for shark predators, one thing that will eat a shark is another shark—with big sharks chowing down on little ones. Sharks can be cannibals, with the larger members of a species gobbling up their smaller neighbors and cousins.

But even the hugest sharks have to watch out for the orca, or killer whale. As you will see in the video, even the great white shark can fall prey to a hungry orca in search of a sushi meal.

Enjoy the video—and pay special attention to the announcer’s silly use of alliteration—which means starting two or more words with the same letter or sound to produce a funny effect. For instance, when I say, “The announcer alliterates,” I am also alliterating!
